Georgian Keyboard Layouts for Linux

Below you will find the descriptions of the Georgian keyboard layouts that will come with major GNU/Linux distributions. If the layouts do not come with your distribution yet, feel free to download the ge file (right-click this link and choose 'Tave Target as...') and replace your existing ge file in /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/. In that case you will also need to download the modified xorg.xml (right-click this link and choose 'Tave Target as...') file and replace the existing one in /etc/X11/xkb/rules/ (or you can modify the file yourself, adding the entries for additional Georgian encodings.)

Layouts include Georgian Mkhedruli alphabeth; most layouts also include some special and ancient characters (like Fi, Yn, Elifi, Turned Gan and Ain). Layouts do not include Georgian Asomtavruli or Georgian Khutsuri alphabeths which are also present in Unicode.

Georgian Typewriter layout is no longer supported, as it is no longer used in Georgia.

Georgia - QWERTY (the default Georgian layout)

This is by far the most popular and widely used layout in Georgia. It is based on US QWERTY layout and shifts some of the Georgian characters. The layout was created in 1980s as personal computers were introduced and there were no Georgian keyboards nor Georgian encoding / charset.

This is how is looks like:

NORMAL CASE:
„ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 - = \
ქ წ ე ტ ყ უ ი ო პ [ ]
ა ს დ ფ გ ჰ ჯ კ ლ ; '

SHIFT:

Georgia - MESS

This means: Georgian Ministry of Education and Science Schools layout

This layout was designed at the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and is intended to be used in Georgian schools, within the scope of Deer Leap Project, aiming computerization of schools in Georgia. Further information regarding the project and Deer Leap Foundation can be found at http://www.dlf.ge

Project coordinator: Giga Shubitidze

The layout is based upon Georgian QWERTY (aka Georgian 'latin') layout, but maps some Georgian characters that reside in SHIFT level in latin layout to the lowercase level, placing them on keys used for special punctuation on US keyboards (the way German layout places 'Umlauts'). As a result, all contemporary Georgian characters can be typed without using the shift key. Shift state maps Latin UPPERCASE letters.

Georgian Ergonomic

This is probably the best layout for typing Georgian language. The layout was created by a group of experts, including Giorgi Alkhazishvili, Kakha Orkoshneli, Kakha Gabunia etc. and is a result of complex study of Georgian language and keyboard ergonomy. This is a Dvorak-like layout.

Georgia - Russian

This layout maps Georgian characters to Russian typewrtier-style keyboard layout. This is not widely used, but is included for very few people who might still be using the layout.

Georgia - AZERTY Tskapo

As the name suggests, this layout is based on French AZERTY keyboard. The layout is based on the Georgian AZERTY layout model by Georgian language and localizaton expert Vasil "Tskapo" Kekelia.

I have tried to make the layouts as useful as possible and reflected the recent changes in Unicode Georgian subrange. I have also tried to include all the punctuation marks used in Georgian today (Georgian quotation marks, section and degree signs, dashes, etc.)
